Video Transcript: My name is Al Fialkovich and I am the Managing Director at Transworld Business Advisors of Denver. Today I would like to discuss my blog titled, “You Wouldn’t Hire a Car Salesman to Sell Your Business.” Now this may sound like a fun topic, but it is actually quite serious and can mean the difference between reaping a high return on your investment or no return at all.
The real discussion centers around why hiring a business broker over a real estate agent or commercial broker for the sale of your business is important. While real estate agents and commercial brokers are all licensed real estate agents, just like business brokers, the overlap stops there.The main identifying difference between real estate agents or commercial brokers and business brokers is their specialization. A business broker specializes in facilitating the buying and selling of businesses, and the other two do not.
Why are we focusing on this difference? Well it is not uncommon for us to hear of a friend of a friend who has chosen not to work with a business broker and now that situation is blowing up in their face. A business broker’s core competencies center on an excellent understanding of the business sales market, complex accounting principles and negotiation skills. Brokers also have access to a large network focused on business sales through memberships with the Colorado Association of Business Intermediaries and the International Business Brokers Association as well as the Transworld Franchise.
The bottom line is that real estate agents or commercial brokers and business brokers are all separate lines of work and service. You wouldn’t hire a car salesman to sell your business now would you?
